This bill modifies Alabama law regarding juvenile court notifications to schools about student criminal charges or delinquency. Under the new provisions, the juvenile court is now required to provide written notice within seven days to the local school district superintendent or private school principal if a student is charged with or adjudicated delinquent for a Class A or B felony. For lesser crimes, the juvenile court is authorized (but not mandated) to provide similar notification. The notice must include only the specific offenses and case disposition. School officials receiving such information are restricted in how they can share it, with the primary purposes being the child's rehabilitation and protecting students and staff. The notification can only be shared confidentially with specific parties like the child's parents, legal guardians, law enforcement, and probation officers. Intentionally violating the confidentiality provisions is now classified as a Class A misdemeanor under juvenile court jurisdiction. The law will take effect on October 1, 2025, providing schools and juvenile courts time to prepare for the new requirements.
