This bill amends the Metropolitan Transit Authority Act and the Regional Transportation Authority Act to modify free transportation services for senior citizens. Specifically, the bill changes the eligibility criteria for free public transportation for seniors aged 65 and older. Instead of meeting the previous income eligibility requirements, seniors will now be eligible for free services if their income does not exceed 105% of the income limitation set forth in the Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities Property Tax Relief Act. The bill applies to fixed-route public transportation services provided by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Suburban Bus Board (Pace), and Commuter Rail Board (Metra). After an initial eligibility determination, a senior's eligibility will automatically renew every 5 years upon verification of Illinois residency through a government-issued identification card. The Department on Aging will provide necessary information to determine eligibility, and the transportation boards are still required to provide reduced fares as mandated by federal law.
