This bill amends the Child Care Act of 1969 to establish specific qualifications for early childhood teachers. The bill outlines four pathways for becoming an early childhood teacher: (1) completing 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university with either 6 semester hours in early childhood education or completing the Gateways Early Childhood Education Credential Level 1 training; (2) completing 1,560 clock hours of child development experience and 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university with either 6 semester hours in early childhood education or the Gateways Credential Level 1 training; (3) completing 2,080 clock hours of child development experience as a teacher assistant in a day care center, completing the Gateways Credential Level 1 training, and providing proof of enrollment in an accredited college or university to complete 30 semester hours within 5 years; or (4) completing a credentialing program approved by the Department of Children and Family Services. The Gateways Early Childhood Education Credential is a professional development system that helps ensure early childhood educators have the necessary skills and knowledge to work effectively with young children. This bill aims to establish clear, comprehensive qualifications for early childhood teachers to improve the quality of child care in Illinois.
