The study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the visitor economy in this area, focusing on why tourists visit, where they come from, and what attractions they find most compelling. The collaborating agencies will identify small businesses, recreation sites, and historic sites within the reserve, analyze how tourism contributes to their success, assess potential barriers to visitation, and develop an overall economic impact assessment. The study will involve gathering data through methods such as working with local organizations, surveying visitors, potentially conducting stakeholder interviews, and reviewing existing data models. By June 30, 2026, the Department of Commerce must report its findings to the Montgomery County Delegation to the General Assembly, including recommendations for policies and programs that can help promote and preserve the Agricultural Reserve while supporting its tourism-dependent businesses and attractions. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and represents an effort to better understand and support the economic ecosystem of this important agricultural region.
