This bill expands health insurance coverage for hearing aids for adults in Maryland by modifying existing insurance regulations. Specifically, the bill defines a "hearing aid" as a nondisposable device designed to improve audibility for adults and requires insurers, health service plans, and health maintenance organizations to provide coverage for medically necessary hearing aids. The key change is that hearing aids can now be ordered, fitted, and dispensed by either a licensed audiologist or a licensed hearing aid dispenser, whereas previously only audiologists could provide these services. The bill limits the insurance benefit to $1,400 per hearing aid for each hearing-impaired ear every 36 months, but allows individuals to choose and pay for more expensive hearing aids without penalty. Importantly, insurers are still permitted to offer more generous coverage than the minimum requirements. The bill will apply to all health insurance policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Maryland on or after January 1, 2026, with the aim of making hearing aids more accessible and affordable for adult residents.
