This bill allows certain law enforcement employees of the Forest Heights Police Department to optionally join the Law Enforcement Officers' Pension System (LEOPS), a state pension program for law enforcement personnel. Under the bill, employees who elect to join LEOPS on or before the effective date of participation will receive service credit equal to 50% of their employment time with the Forest Heights Police Department prior to the effective date. The election to join is a one-time, irrevocable decision, and employees must file a written application with the State Retirement Agency. If an employee does not elect membership during the specified period, they cannot subsequently become a member of LEOPS. To participate, at least 60% of the department's law enforcement officers must petition to join, and the legislative body must approve participation. The bill also specifies that if a Forest Heights Police Department employee becomes a LEOPS member after the effective date, they cannot receive service credit for employment before that date. The provisions of this bill will take effect on June 1, 2025.
