On February 3, 1943, when the U.S. Army transport Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine in the North Atlantic, causing the loss of nearly 700 lives, these four chaplains—Lieutenant George L. Fox (Methodist), Lieutenant Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lieutenant John P. Washington (Catholic), and Lieutenant Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed)—demonstrated extraordinary heroism by giving up their own life jackets to save other soldiers and remaining on the sinking ship, offering prayers and encouragement until the end. Lieutenant Goode, who was born in Brooklyn, was one of these chaplains, and all four were posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Cross for their selfless actions. The resolution highlights their unique ecumenical spirit and love for humanity, noting that they were last seen arm-in-arm in prayer on the ship's hull, and seeks to ensure their remarkable story of sacrifice and brotherhood is remembered. The resolution also requests that copies be transmitted to Governor Hochul and the American Legion Department of New York.
