AI Summary

This bill amends the Illinois Election Code to eliminate direct recording electronic (DRE) voting systems and restrict the types of voting machines that can be used in elections. Specifically, the bill requires that only voting machines or voting systems approved by the State Board of Elections may be used by election authorities. The legislation defines "voting machine" to explicitly exclude direct recording electronic voting machines and systems that use computers as marking devices for ballot sheets. The bill repeals the existing article on DRE voting systems and makes conforming changes to several sections of the election code. Key provisions include mandating that voting equipment must enable voters to vote in absolute secrecy, allow for voting across different party tickets, and reject overvotes for any office. The changes are set to take effect on January 1, 2026, giving election authorities time to update their voting equipment to comply with the new requirements. This legislation aims to standardize and potentially improve the reliability and security of voting equipment used in Illinois elections by phasing out certain types of electronic voting systems.
