This bill modifies the existing Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Monument Grant Program by expanding the program's scope and establishing new prioritization criteria for grant applications. The bill allows Tribal governments to apply for grants alongside counties, and directs the chief geospatial information officer to prioritize grant funding based on three specific criteria: (1) preserving monuments at risk of destruction or being lost, (2) counties with a low percentage of certified PLSS monument corners, and (3) counties demonstrating that remonumentation will support economic development. Additionally, the bill appropriates $10 million in fiscal year 2026 for the grant program, with the same base funding continuing in fiscal years 2027 and 2028. The legislation also permits up to $350,000 per fiscal year to be used for program administration. The changes are designed to help counties and Tribal governments maintain and update historic land survey monuments, which are critical for establishing land boundaries and supporting geographic and economic planning. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2025.
