AI Summary

This bill expands the scope of pharmacy practice in Illinois to include the assessment, consultation, and dispensation of contraceptives, specifically adding emergency contraception to the existing provisions. Under the new law, pharmacists will be able to dispense up to a 12-month supply of contraceptives, including emergency contraception, through a valid prescription or standing order. To do this, pharmacists must complete an accredited educational training program that covers patient self-screening, risk assessment, contraceptive counseling, and education. The bill requires pharmacists to have patients complete a self-screening risk assessment based on the most current U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, provide comprehensive counseling about contraception methods, and use professional judgment to refer patients to healthcare providers when necessary. The patient consultation must occur in a private setting, and the pharmacist must maintain appropriate records. Additionally, the bill updates the medical assistance program to cover patient care services related to contraceptives provided by pharmacists, ensuring reimbursement at 85% of the physician service rate. The changes aim to improve access to contraceptive services by allowing pharmacists to play a more active role in reproductive healthcare.
