Specifically, the bill mandates that students learn about specific communist leaders and their regimes, including Mao Zedong (China), Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union), Fidel Castro (Cuba), Vladimir Lenin (Russian Revolution), Pol Pot (Cambodia), and Nicolas Maduro (Venezuela). The curriculum must detail the oppression experienced under these regimes, covering topics such as poverty, starvation, forced migration, systemic violence, and suppression of free expression. Additionally, the governor will designate a "Victims of Communism Remembrance Day" in public schools, during which age-appropriate instruction on these topics will be provided. The new curriculum requirements and remembrance day will be implemented starting in the 2025-2026 school year, with the State Board of Education required to review and revise social studies curriculum guidelines as needed to accommodate this new educational mandate.
