AI Summary

This bill, known as Dax's Law, amends the Humane Care for Animals Act to modify provisions related to injuring or killing animals used in law enforcement. The bill removes references to "service animals" and clarifies language about animals used for law enforcement purposes. Specifically, it makes it unlawful for a person to willfully or maliciously torture, mutilate, injure, disable, poison, or kill animals used by law enforcement departments, search and rescue dogs used for law enforcement, law enforcement animals in training, and accelerant detection canines used by fire investigators or law enforcement officers for arson investigations. If an offender is convicted of such actions, they will be responsible for any veterinarian bills associated with the injured animal, in addition to other potential penalties. The changes aim to provide stronger legal protections for animals that assist law enforcement in their duties, ensuring that those who intentionally harm these working animals face appropriate consequences.
