AI Summary
This bill amends the Public Higher Education Act to establish a progressive minimum hourly wage for employees at public higher education institutions. The bill defines "employees" broadly to include workers such as custodial staff, transportation workers, food service providers, teaching assistants, and administrative staff. It mandates a graduated minimum hourly rate: $22 for the 2025-2026 academic year, increasing to $23 in 2026-2027, and $24 in 2027-2028. After the 2027-2028 academic year, the minimum hourly rate will be automatically adjusted annually based on the percentage increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), as published by the United States Department of Labor. This ensures that the minimum wage for these educational support workers keeps pace with inflation, providing a mechanism for maintaining the real value of their wages over time. The bill becomes effective immediately upon enactment, requiring public higher education institutions to comply with the new minimum wage standards starting in the 2025-2026 academic year.
