This bill amends the Public Safety Employee Benefits Act to modify health insurance coverage for spouses and dependent children of law enforcement, correctional, or firefighting personnel who suffer catastrophic injuries or are killed in the line of duty. Specifically, the bill removes the language that previously limited health insurance premium coverage for a surviving spouse only until remarriage, which means the employer will now continue to pay the entire health insurance premium for the surviving spouse indefinitely, regardless of whether they remarry. The bill maintains the existing provisions that require the employer to cover health insurance premiums for dependent children until they reach the age of majority or until the end of the calendar year when they turn 25, provided they remain dependent or are full-time or part-time students. The bill also preserves other existing provisions, such as the requirement that health insurance benefits from other sources will reduce benefits under this act, and the prohibition against fraudulently obtaining these benefits, which remains a Class A misdemeanor. This change aims to provide more comprehensive and long-term support for families of public safety employees who are injured or killed while serving their communities.
