AI Summary
This bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to enhance school bus driver permit requirements and safety regulations. Specifically, the bill requires the Secretary of State, in conjunction with the State Board of Education, to develop a separate classroom course and refresher course for first division vehicles (like smaller school buses) being operated as school buses. All applicants to operate first division vehicles must now meet additional training requirements, including completing either a state-developed course or a vendor-approved training program that covers safe driving practices, student transportation with disabilities, emergency preparedness, and safe pick-up and drop-off procedures. The bill also introduces an exemption from the medical examination requirement for applicants working with transportation providers that use advanced telematics systems to monitor driver performance. Additionally, the bill modifies vehicle safety testing intervals, mandating that first division vehicles used for school transportation be tested at least every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first. These changes aim to improve school transportation safety by ensuring more comprehensive training and ongoing vehicle maintenance. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
