This bill expands the existing Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) Grant Program by adding a new provision that allows the Board of Public Works to make grants specifically for land acquisition when recommended by the Secretary of Health. FQHCs are community-based healthcare providers that receive federal funding to offer comprehensive primary care services to underserved populations, regardless of patients' ability to pay. Currently, the grant program already supports various initiatives like converting public buildings into health centers, acquiring existing buildings, renovating facilities, purchasing equipment, and planning/constructing health centers. The new provision will enable counties, municipal corporations, and nonprofit organizations to receive grants to purchase land intended for constructing or establishing a new federally qualified health center. This amendment aims to help expand access to healthcare by providing financial support for the initial land acquisition phase of establishing a new FQHC. The bill is set to take effect on October 1, 2025, giving local entities time to prepare for and utilize this new grant opportunity.
