Under the new provisions, exempt fire agencies can take reasonable measures to ensure no cannabis impairment, including pre-employment testing, random drug tests, and testing for cause, in accordance with federal standards. Furthermore, if an exempt employee is prescribed medical cannabis, they must immediately report the prescription to their agency, which will then consult with a medical director to determine the employee's fitness for duty and potential work restrictions. The goal of this legislation is to maintain high safety standards for emergency response personnel by preventing potential impairment that could compromise their ability to perform critical, life-saving tasks.
