This bill establishes a Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway to high school diploma that provides an alternative route for students to earn a diploma focused on developing career-ready technical skills. The CTE pathway will be available to all students, including those with disabilities and English language learners, and will result in either a Regents or local diploma. To earn the diploma, students must complete a CTE course of study in fields like agriculture, business, health occupations, technology, and trade and industrial education, pass a three-part technical assessment, complete work-based learning experiences, and develop a work-skills employability profile. The requirements will be determined by regulations from the commissioner of education, and students first entering ninth grade in the 2026-2027 school year will be the first eligible to pursue this pathway if their school district offers it. The CTE pathway differs from traditional diploma requirements, particularly in assessment methods, while still ensuring students are prepared for career opportunities.
