This bill amends the New York State education law to create equal professional recognition and opportunities for individuals with bachelor's degrees in engineering technology and those with bachelor's degrees in engineering. Specifically, the bill ensures that applicants with engineering technology degrees will have the same education and experience credit requirements, the same eligibility for an "engineer in training" identification card, and the same examination and examination eligibility requirements as applicants with traditional engineering degrees. The bill modifies section 7206 of the education law to explicitly include accredited engineering technology degrees as a valid educational pathway for professional engineering licensure. The changes will take effect 180 days after the bill becomes law and will apply to professional engineer license applications received on or after that date. This legislation aims to recognize the professional equivalence of engineering technology and engineering degree programs and remove potential barriers to professional certification for graduates of engineering technology programs.
