This bill directs the executive secretary of the Oregon Geographic Names Board to compile a comprehensive list of geographic features in Oregon that bear offensive names, defined as those that are insulting or derogatory to Oregon's nine federally recognized Indian tribes or to any race, nationality, or ethnicity. The executive secretary must consult with various stakeholders, including the Geographic Names Board, tribal leaders, county and municipal officials, state representatives, local landowners, and other interested parties, to determine new, non-offensive names for these geographic features. The bill requires the executive secretary to provide the compiled list and detailed instructions on proposing new names to all members of the Legislative Assembly, Oregon's federally recognized tribes, county governing bodies, and county historical societies. By August 1, 2026, the list must be distributed, and within three years of the bill's effective date, the executive secretary must submit proposals to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names recommending new, non-offensive names for the listed features. The bill includes a reporting requirement for the executive secretary to submit progress updates to legislative committees and has an emergency clause, meaning it takes effect immediately upon passage. The provisions of this bill are set to be repealed on January 2, 2029.
