This resolution honors the life of Nellie Dunaway Duke, a distinguished Georgian who passed away on January 28, 2025, and recognizes her significant contributions to her community and women's rights. Born in 1931 in Cave Springs, Georgia, Duke was a semi-professional basketball player in her youth who later became a prominent advocate for women's rights, serving as chair of the Georgia Commission on Women and playing a key role in efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. She was a dedicated community servant, working in roles such as director of Christian education at the First Methodist Church in Carrollton, director of the Teen Club at the Carrollton Recreation Department, and regional director for the American Cancer Society. Duke was also a loving family woman, married to Henry Duke for 66 years and mother to five children, grandmother to ten, and great-grandmother to ten. The resolution, passed by the House of Representatives, honors her memory and directs the House Clerk to provide a copy of the resolution to her family, celebrating her lifelong commitment to service, family, and community advocacy.
