The study must be completed within 24 months and will examine critical aspects including the financial costs of premature birth to society, factors impacting preterm birth rates, opportunities for earlier detection of risk factors, targeted research strategies for preventing premature births, best practices for reducing premature birth rates, and precision medicine approaches focused on behavioral and biological influences on premature birth. The study will include an in-depth analysis of neonatal intensive care unit stays, long-term health care costs, potential interventions, and public health support for parents before, during, and after hospital care. The resulting report will be transmitted to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and key congressional committees, providing a comprehensive overview of premature birth challenges and potential solutions.
