This bill requires school districts and open-enrollment charter schools to issue student identification cards to high school students that include the student's name, photograph, and date of birth, starting in the 2025-2026 school year. The bill also expands acceptable forms of voter identification to include these new high school student ID cards, as well as other state or federal identification cards that contain a photograph and date of birth. Previously, acceptable voter identification was limited to items like driver's licenses, military ID cards, passports, and handgun licenses. By adding high school student IDs and broadening the categories of acceptable identification, the bill aims to make voting more accessible while maintaining identification requirements. The bill will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in the Texas Legislature, or otherwise will take effect on September 1, 2025.
