AI Summary

This bill establishes the second week of November as SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) Awareness Week in North Carolina and encourages school districts to provide seizure awareness training for educators. SUDEP is a condition where individuals with epilepsy die suddenly and unexpectedly, with more than one out of 1,000 people with epilepsy experiencing this tragic outcome annually, and the risk increasing to more than one out of 150 people with uncontrolled seizures. The bill officially designates a specific week to raise awareness about this serious health issue and names the school training provision the "Shannon Leigh Adcock, Steven Anthony Christos, and Samantha Davis Memorial Act," which recommends that local school boards develop training programs for teachers and school personnel who work with students who have epilepsy or are prone to seizures. The legislation aims to educate school staff about the risks associated with epilepsy and potentially help prevent sudden unexpected deaths by increasing understanding and preparedness. The act will become effective immediately upon becoming law.
