AI Summary

This bill requires school administrators in Iowa to teach a certain number of classes based on their role and the size of their school district, with the goal of keeping administrators directly involved in classroom instruction. Specifically, the bill mandates that superintendents and assistant superintendents teach at least one semester-long class every three years, while high school and middle school principals must teach three semester-long classes every three years, and elementary school principals must teach two subject areas for at least one semester every three years. Assistant principals, athletic directors, and deans of students have similar teaching requirements, with the precise number of classes varying based on school district size. The requirements differ slightly for districts with one, two, or no high schools. The superintendent of each school district must ensure compliance and report annually to the state department of education. If an administrator fails to meet these teaching requirements, they may be subject to a hearing by the Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) and potential disciplinary action, including license suspension. The bill defines an administrator as a person licensed to coordinate, supervise, or direct an educational program, and requires that any administrator teaching classes hold a valid license with the appropriate endorsement.
