This bill aims to support robotics extracurricular activities in Iowa schools by adding two key provisions. First, it requires the Department of Education to provide educational resources and technical assistance to school districts for establishing career and technical student organizations related to robotics, in compliance with the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act. This means the department will help schools create and support robotics teams and competitions, which can provide students with valuable hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Second, the bill authorizes high school athletic organizations to sponsor and administer interscholastic robotics contests and competitions, expanding opportunities for students to participate in robotics-related activities beyond traditional sports. The organizations can do this while still maintaining their ability to sponsor other types of interscholastic contests. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, giving schools and organizations time to prepare for implementing these new provisions.
