This resolution recognizes February 18, 2025, as Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas Day at the State Capitol, honoring a federally recognized tribe with a rich historical background. The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe, originally comprising the Alibamu and Koasati tribes, migrated to East Texas in the 1760s and played significant roles in historical events, including the Mexican War of Independence and the Texas Revolution. With approximately 1,200 members, half of whom live on a 10,200-acre reservation in the Big Thicket area, the tribe operates as a sovereign government providing comprehensive services and employment opportunities for its members. The resolution highlights the tribe's contributions to Texas history, noting their scenic reservation which attracts thousands of visitors annually, hosts the Naskila Casino, and holds an annual powwow and music festival. By officially recognizing this day, the Texas Senate aims to celebrate the tribe's unique heritage and ongoing efforts to build a prosperous future, while extending a warm welcome to tribal members visiting the Capitol.
