This bill removes the population requirement for counties to create the office of registrar of voters in Nevada, which previously was limited to counties with 100,000 or more residents (currently Clark and Washoe Counties). Under the existing law, a board of county commissioners in qualifying counties could create the registrar of voters position, who would then assume most election-related powers and duties traditionally held by the county clerk, with the exception of delivering election certificates. The proposed bill would allow any county in Nevada, regardless of population size, to establish this office and appoint a registrar of voters. The changes to Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) 244.164 would take effect on July 1, 2025, giving counties the flexibility to create this administrative position to manage election-related responsibilities based on their local needs and preferences.
