This bill establishes a 15-member task force to conduct a comprehensive study on educator diversity in New York state. The task force will be composed of appointees from various state political leaders, including five from the governor, four from the senate president, four from the assembly speaker, one from the senate minority leader, and one from the assembly minority leader. The task force will investigate critical aspects of educator diversity, such as barriers preventing students of color from entering or remaining in the teaching profession, recruitment and retention efforts, mentorship programs, "grow your own" initiatives to encourage students of color to become teachers, scholarship opportunities, pathways for teachers of color to become school leaders, and reviewing state education department reports on diversity. The members will not receive compensation but will be reimbursed for their expenses, and they must designate a chair within thirty days of the act's effective date. The task force is required to submit a detailed report of its findings, conclusions, and recommendations to the governor and legislature by December 31, 2026, and the entire act will expire on January 31, 2027, ensuring a focused and time-limited examination of educator diversity challenges and potential solutions.
