This bill amends the New York State Public Health Law to include rescue inhaler prescriptions for individuals under age nineteen in the statewide immunization information system (SIIS), which is a computerized database maintained by the state department of health. Starting January 1, 2025, healthcare providers who prescribe rescue inhalers to patients under nineteen will be required to report these prescriptions to the system within fourteen days. A "rescue inhaler" is defined as a treatment device prescribed for individuals with asthma or other chronic respiratory diseases. The bill expands the existing immunization information system to include these prescription records, allowing authorized users like healthcare providers, schools, local health departments, and social services to access this information for purposes such as outreach, quality improvement, research, and disease control. Patients or their guardians can also request copies of these prescription records. The goal is to improve tracking and management of respiratory health for young people by creating a comprehensive electronic record of rescue inhaler prescriptions, similar to how the system already tracks immunizations and blood lead analysis results.
