This bill amends Kentucky state law to require the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) to implement a mandatory one-hour dementia training and continuing education course for its employees. The training must cover essential topics including the basics of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, such as warning signs, risk factors, disease stages, identification of adults with dementia, communication strategies, safety risks (like wandering and elder abuse), and best practices for interacting with dementia patients. The training will use free resources from a nationally recognized entity specializing in Alzheimer's and dementia. Specifically, the bill mandates that supervisory and direct service employees at local, district, and state levels, as well as those providing adult protective services, must complete this training either within six months of the law's effective date or upon initial employment, and then repeat the continuing education at least once every two years. The goal is to improve understanding and support for adults with dementia among DCBS staff, ultimately enhancing the quality of care and protection for vulnerable individuals.
