This bill amends the education law to expand transportation responsibilities for school districts located in cities with a population of one million or more. Specifically, the bill modifies existing provisions to include transportation for students attending remedial services, doing homework, or participating in childcare programs, in addition to regular academic classes. Under the new provisions, school districts would be required to provide transportation (or reimburse transportation costs) for public and nonpublic school students in kindergarten through sixth grade who remain at their school for these additional activities. The transportation provisions remain tied to existing distance requirements, meaning students must live at least one mile away (for grades 3-6) or one-half mile away (for grades K-2) from their school of attendance. The bill appears targeted at large urban school districts, particularly New York City, to provide more comprehensive transportation support for students engaged in educational and care-related activities beyond standard academic class times. The amendment takes effect immediately upon passage.
