AI Summary

This bill designates November 14 of each year as Ruby Bridges walk to school day in the state of Kansas, commemorating the historic day in 1960 when Ruby Bridges, a six-year-old African American student, became a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement by integrating a previously all-white elementary school in New Orleans. The bill specifically notes that if November 14 falls on a weekend, the commemorative day will be observed on the following Wednesday. By establishing this annual day of recognition, the bill aims to honor Bridges' courage in facing racism and segregation, drawing attention to her role in the broader struggle for civil rights and educational equality. The designation is particularly significant given Kansas' central role in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case, which ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The bill encourages students, teachers, and school staff to engage in dialogue, commemorate Bridges' historic steps, and participate in activism to combat racism and bullying.
