Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Part 14 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to other educational programs under the "Quality Basic Education Act," so as to provide that local boards of education shall be authorized to provide instruction in hunting safety in grades six through 12; to provide for the adoption of content standards by the State Board of Education; to provide that local boards of education may establish a curriculum in hunting safety; to provide for instructor requirements; to provide legislative findings; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill authorizes local school boards in Georgia to provide hunting safety instruction for students in grades six through 12 beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. The legislation requires the State Board of Education to adopt content standards for hunting safety instruction by April 1, 2026, and allows local boards to develop a curriculum based on hunter education courses offered by the Department of Natural Resources. The bill emphasizes that instructors must be certified as hunter education instructors by the Department of Natural Resources. The legislative findings suggest that such courses will help train and recruit future sportsmen and women, teach youth about hunting and fishing, and promote wildlife conservation. The bill aims to provide young people with comprehensive information about hunting practices, conservation ethics, and wildlife appreciation, while giving local school districts the flexibility to integrate this instruction into existing courses of study.
