This resolution recognizes February 20, 2025, as Alpha Day at the Capitol, honoring Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men, founded in 1906 at Cornell University by seven men known as the "Jewels." The resolution highlights the fraternity's 118-year history of promoting brotherhood, scholarship, and community service, noting its significant contributions including providing over $2.3 million in educational scholarships and volunteering 850,000 community service hours. The fraternity, with more than 70,000 members across over 700 chapters globally, has included many notable members such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, and Raphael Warnock. The resolution calls on citizens to recognize and applaud the fraternity's contributions, particularly its Georgia District, which is led by District Director James Ford II and represents 42 state chapters. The Senate also directs its Secretary to distribute copies of the resolution to the fraternity, the public, and the press.
