This bill authorizes the creation of a specialized license plate to support the 9-8-8 suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system. The 9-8-8 hotline is a nationwide three-digit number (similar to 9-1-1) that provides immediate mental health crisis support. Under this legislation, any New York resident can request a distinctive license plate designed in consultation with the state's Office of Mental Health. The plate will be issued like standard registration plates but with an additional $25 annual service charge. One year after the law takes effect, up to $5,000 will be allocated to cover the production costs of these special license plates. The bill aims to raise awareness about mental health resources and generate funding for suicide prevention efforts by offering New York residents an optional commemorative license plate. The new license plates will become available 120 days after the bill is signed into law.
