This bill, known as the "Veterans Equal Access Act," would authorize Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare providers to provide recommendations and opinions to veterans about participating in state-level marijuana programs. Currently, VA healthcare providers are restricted from discussing or advising veterans about medical marijuana, even in states where it is legal. The bill would allow VA physicians and other healthcare professionals to: 1) provide recommendations to veterans who live in states with legal marijuana programs about participating in those programs, and 2) complete official forms documenting these recommendations. The bill defines "State" broadly to include not just the 50 states, but also the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, possessions, and federally recognized Native American tribes. By enabling VA healthcare providers to have open conversations about medical marijuana, the bill aims to give veterans more comprehensive healthcare options and support in states where marijuana is legally available for medical use.
