This bill modifies the existing law regarding the Teachers Retirement System to allow Tier 2 teachers to use their accrued annual and sick leave towards retirement service credit. Specifically, the bill removes a previous restriction that prevented teachers who first became members of the Teachers Retirement System on or after July 1, 2015, from applying their accrued annual and sick leave towards retirement service credit. Under the proposed change, teachers can now convert their unused annual and sick leave into additional retirement service credit, with a formula of two days of retirement service credit for each one day of accrued leave. However, this additional credited service cannot be used to meet initial retirement eligibility criteria, but instead can only be used as supplemental service credit. The bill aims to provide more flexibility for teachers in calculating their retirement benefits by allowing them to leverage accumulated leave time, potentially enabling some teachers to retire with enhanced service credits.
