This bill establishes a new law enforcement aviation support grant program, administered by the department, to provide financial assistance to law enforcement aviation support units, specifically those using rotary-wing aircraft (helicopters). The program will work with a statewide association of law enforcement executives to identify eligible units that offer aviation support to any jurisdiction in the state without cost, excluding refueling. Fifty percent of the appropriated funds will be equally distributed to these recognized units for operational costs like pilot and crew expenses, maintenance, upgrades, insurance, fuel, and training. The remaining funds will be available for reimbursement of costs associated with search and rescue or training missions conducted by these units, regardless of location, though depreciation costs are excluded. Any funds left after these reimbursements will be awarded to the Washington state patrol's aviation section. These grants are intended to supplement, not replace, existing local funding, and eligible local units must have policies in place that align with specific state laws and guidelines. The bill also includes a provision that makes it void if specific funding is not provided by June 30, 2026.
