This resolution extends the sincerest sympathy of the Mississippi Senate to the family of William Swan Yerger, a distinguished Hinds County Senior Circuit Court Judge who passed away on August 1, 2024. The resolution honors Yerger's remarkable life and achievements, highlighting his significant contributions to his community, legal profession, and public service. Born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1932, Yerger was a fifth-generation Mississippian who graduated from Central High School, attended Virginia Military Institute and Ole Miss, served in the United States Air Force, and became a prominent lawyer and judge. Throughout his career, he held numerous leadership positions, including president of the Jackson Junior Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Metropolitan Jackson YMCA, and president of the Mississippi Arts Festival. Professionally, he served as a circuit court judge from 1996 to 2010, presiding over civil and criminal trials, and was known for emphasizing professional ethics, integrity, and civility. The resolution commends his civic energy, leadership, and commitment to his family and community, and directs that it be presented to his surviving family, The Mississippi Bar, the North Jackson Rotary Club, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
