This resolution commends Queen Street Baptist Church on its 140th anniversary in 2024, recognizing its long-standing historical significance and community impact in Norfolk, Virginia. Founded in December 1884 by Reverend Richard Spiller and 16 formerly enslaved people who split from Bank Street Baptist Church, the congregation has provided spiritual guidance, worship opportunities, and extensive community outreach for over a century. Throughout its history, the church has responded to community needs by establishing education programs during school segregation, operating food pantries, supporting youth literacy, providing substance abuse and financial literacy programs, and serving thousands of people annually. Currently led by Reverend Dr. Glenn E. Porter, who is also an adjunct professor and police department volunteer chaplain, Queen Street Baptist Church has been a critical spiritual and social support institution that has helped make Norfolk a welcoming community. The resolution formally acknowledges the church's contributions and directs the Senate Clerk to prepare a copy of the resolution to be presented to the church as an expression of admiration and appreciation.
