This bill establishes a new professional designation called "architect-in-training" (AIT) for individuals pursuing licensure as an architect in California. To obtain this title, an applicant must have passed at least one division of the architectural licensing examination and be supervised by a licensed architect who agrees to be responsible for their work. The title can be used for up to four years, with the possibility of a second authorization if the applicant has passed an exam division in the preceding four years. Individuals with this title are prohibited from independently offering architectural services and can only use the specific abbreviation "AIT". The California Architects Board is authorized to investigate and take administrative action against individuals misusing the title, including suspending or revoking their authorization. The supervising licensed architect can also be subject to disciplinary actions for violations committed by the architect-in-training within their employment scope. The bill includes provisions for changing supervision, placing the authorization on inactive status, and charging a reasonable evaluation fee. Importantly, the provisions will become operative on January 1, 2027, and will remain in effect until January 1, 2037, after which they will be repealed.
