This bill establishes a crime firearm reward program designed to incentivize individuals to provide information leading to the recovery of firearms used in felony offenses. Under this program, a person can receive up to $500 for information that helps locate a firearm used in a felony, and up to $5,000 if the firearm's recovery results in a criminal conviction. The reward is not available to law enforcement officers, individuals with outstanding warrants, or government employees obtaining information through their regular job duties. The cash rewards will be paid by the city or county associated with the law enforcement agency that recovered the firearm, using funds from the county and municipal criminal justice assistance accounts. The bill also makes technical amendments to existing statutes related to these criminal justice assistance accounts, primarily adding language that allows payments made under the new crime firearm reward program to be considered a valid criminal justice purpose for fund expenditure. These changes aim to provide a financial incentive for community members to assist law enforcement in recovering firearms used in serious criminal activities.
