This bill amends Minnesota law to require permit to carry holders to notify their local sheriff within 30 days of changing their legal name, in addition to the existing requirement to notify about address changes. Currently, permit holders must inform the sheriff within 30 days of changing their permanent address or if they lose or destroy their permit card. Under this amendment, they would now also need to report a legal name change within the same 30-day timeframe. If a permit holder fails to provide this notification, they would be subject to a petty misdemeanor with a potential fine of up to $25 for a first offense. After notifying the sheriff of a name change, the permit holder can obtain a replacement permit card by paying $10 and submitting an official standardized application. The bill maintains the existing provision that firearms carried in violation of this requirement are not subject to forfeiture, and the process for obtaining a replacement permit card remains largely unchanged, with the addition of legal name change as a reason for replacement.
