This bill authorizes the New York State Commissioner of Education to establish a "Purple Star Schools Program" to recognize and support schools that demonstrate a commitment to military-connected students and their families. Under this program, schools can be designated as a Purple Star School if they meet specific criteria, including: designating a staff military liaison to identify and support military-connected students; maintaining a website with resources for military families; creating a student-led transition program; offering professional development for staff about military-connected student needs; adding an identifier to military-connected students' records; and showing support through official resolutions, events celebrating military children and families, or partnerships with military installations. A "military-connected student" is defined as a school-aged child in a household with an active duty military member, reserve force member, or organized militia member. Schools can partner with third-party organizations to provide these support services, and the Commissioner is authorized to create rules to implement the program. The bill aims to provide comprehensive support and recognition for students from military families as they navigate educational transitions and challenges.
