This bill modifies the existing law regarding graduation pathway options for public high school students in Washington state, expanding the ways students can demonstrate career and college readiness. The bill adds "competency-based assessments" as a new option for students to meet graduation requirements in English language arts and mathematics, alongside existing pathways such as standardized tests, dual credit courses, advanced placement courses, performance-based learning experiences, and career and technical education sequences. The bill maintains the existing goal of providing multiple flexible routes for students to show they meet state learning standards, with each pathway intended to align with the student's individual high school and beyond plan. School districts are encouraged, but not required, to offer all pathway options and must annually provide comprehensive information about these options to students in grades 8-12 and their parents, with a recommendation to begin informing students as early as 6th grade. The state board of education will be responsible for establishing rules to implement these graduation pathway options, including creating guidelines for performance-based learning experiences and specifying which competency-based assessments qualify for meeting graduation requirements.
