This bill establishes a new Office of Health Professional Nutrition Education within the New York State Department of Health to improve nutrition education for healthcare professionals. The office will assist health professional training programs in developing nutrition-focused curricula by establishing core competencies, serving as an information clearinghouse, and recognizing programs with excellent nutrition education. The bill creates a 14-member Health Professional Nutrition Education Council, appointed by the governor, which will include representatives from medical schools, healthcare professionals, and experts in public health, nutrition, and medical education. The council will advise the commissioner on nutrition education matters, help the office with its responsibilities, and serve as a liaison for nutrition education initiatives. The office will be authorized to apply for grants and promote nutrition education research, and will be required to submit a comprehensive triennial report to the governor and legislature detailing the office's activities, the status of nutrition education for health professionals in New York, and potential policy improvements. All council meetings will be live webcasted and archived to ensure transparency. The first report is due by September 1, 2028, and the bill takes effect immediately upon passage.
