This bill amends the New York State Penal Law to expand the definition of assault in the second degree to include physical assaults against a wide range of airport employees while they are performing their assigned duties or tasks directly related to their work at an airport. The bill specifically adds several categories of airport workers to the list of protected employees, including flight crew members, flight attendants, terminal cleaners, cabin cleaners, facilities cleaners, wheelchair assist employees, baggage handlers, skycaps, ticket agents, customer service employees, security guards, queue management employees, shuttle bus drivers, and any employees who work on the airport tarmac. By making assault against these workers a second-degree assault, the legislation increases legal protections for airport personnel and potentially creates more serious criminal penalties for those who intentionally cause physical injury to these workers while they are performing their job responsibilities. The amendment applies to employees working at any airport, airport authority, or company in the state of New York, whether public or private. The bill will take effect 90 days after it becomes law.
