This bill amends the Worker's Disability Compensation Act to expand worker's compensation presumptions for respiratory and heart diseases for public safety workers, including full-time, part-time, and paid on-call members of fire, police, and public safety departments, county sheriffs, state police, conservation officers, forest fire officers, and motor carrier enforcement officers. The bill creates the Christopher R. Slezak first responder presumed coverage fund to provide benefits for first responders diagnosed with specific types of cancer, including respiratory tract, bladder, skin, brain, kidney, blood, thyroid, testicular, prostate, lymphatic, ovarian, breast, and non-HPV cervical cancers. For first responders with 60 or more months of active service who have been exposed to hazards in their work, the bill establishes a presumption that these cancers arose from their employment, which can be rebutted only by specific scientific evidence, such as substantial tobacco use. The fund will pay claims for eligible first responders, and the bill requires annual reporting on claims, costs, and fund status. The legislation aims to provide additional support and presumptive coverage for public safety workers who develop certain diseases and cancers potentially related to their professional duties.
