This bill eliminates the Public Safety Advisory Council by modifying existing law to remove references to the council and repealing the statute that established it. Specifically, the bill amends Minnesota Statutes section 626.8457 to remove language related to the council's role in receiving peace officer data and evaluating officer performance. The bill also entirely repeals section 626.8435, which originally established the Public Safety Advisory Council as a 15-member body consisting of representatives from law enforcement associations, community-specific boards, mental health and victim advocacy organizations, and legislative appointees. Previously, this council was responsible for assisting the Peace Officer Standards and Training Board in maintaining policies that protect civil and human rights, promoting positive police-community interactions, and submitting annual reports with recommendations for police-related reforms. By eliminating the council, the bill reduces the formal mechanisms for community input into law enforcement policy and oversight.
